Course Outline: 4-Day / 40-Hour Electrical Code Class

Welcome to the Comprehensive 4-Day Electrical Code Training!

This 40-hour course is designed to provide a thorough understanding of the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC), equipping participants with the knowledge and skills needed for safe and compliant electrical installations. Each day is structured to cover different chapters and topics of the NEC, ensuring a complete grasp of the essential requirements and practices in the electrical field. This course is ideal for electricians, contractors, inspectors, and anyone in the electrical industry looking to stay current with NEC standards.

Introduction to the NEC and General Requirements

Morning Session:
  1. Introduction to the NEC and Course Overview
    • Purpose, scope, and structure of the NEC
    • How to navigate and use the NEC effectively
  2. Chapter 1: General
    • Article 90 - Introduction Overview of the NEC’s purpose and its application in electrical installations.
    • Article 100 - Definitions Key terms and definitions essential for understanding the NEC.
  3. Article 110 - General Requirements for Electrical Installations
    • Part I: General Requirements
    • Part II: 1000 Volts, Nominal, or Less
    • Part III: Over 1000 Volts, Nominal
    • Part IV: Tunnel Installations over 1000 Volts, Nominal
    • Part V: Manholes and Other Electrical Enclosures Intended for Personnel Entry
Afternoon Session:
  1. Chapter 2: Wiring and Protection
    • Article 200 - Use and Identification of Grounded Conductors Requirements for the use and identification of grounded conductors in different settings.
    • Article 210 - Branch Circuits
      • General, Ratings, and Required Outlets
  2. Article 215 - Feeders and Article 220 - Load Calculations
    • Calculations for branch circuits, feeders, and service loads
    • Optional load calculations and specific settings like healthcare facilities and marinas

Wiring Methods, Materials, and Equipment for General Use

Morning Session:
  1. Chapter 3: Wiring Methods and Materials
    • Article 300 - General Requirements for Wiring Methods and Materials
    • Article 310 - Conductors for General Wiring
      • Construction, specifications, and installation
  2. Various Articles for Wiring Methods (Articles 312 - 390)
    • Cabinets, boxes, raceways, and conduits (PVC, RMC, FMC, etc.)
    • Requirements for different materials and methods
Afternoon Session:
  1. Chapter 4: Equipment for General Use
    • Article 400 - Flexible Cords and Cables
    • Article 406 - Receptacles, Cord Connectors, and Plugs
    • Article 410 - Luminaires, Lampholders, and Lamps
  2. Articles Covering Heating Equipment, Generators, Transformers, and Motors (Articles 424 - 450)
    • Requirements and specifications for safe installation and use

Special Occupancies and Special Equipment

Morning Session:
  1. Chapter 5: Special Occupancies
    • Article 500 - Hazardous (Classified) Locations
    • Articles 511 - 517
      • Commercial garages, aircraft hangars, healthcare facilities, etc.
  2. Articles 518 - 547: Special Occupancies Continued
    • Theaters, agricultural buildings, mobile homes, and RV parks
Afternoon Session:
  1. Chapter 6: Special Equipment
    • Article 600 - Electric Signs and Outline Lighting
    • Articles 620 - 695
      • Elevators, escalators, cranes, industrial machinery, fire pumps, etc.
  2. In-Depth Review and Case Studies for Special Equipment Installations
    • Focus on practical application and real-world scenarios

Special Conditions, Communications, and Class Review

Morning Session:
  1. Chapter 7: Special Conditions
    • Article 700 - Emergency Systems
    • Articles 702 - 770
      • Standby power systems, optical fiber cables, fire alarms, etc.
  2. Chapter 8: Communications Systems
    • Article 800 - Communications Circuits
    • Articles 820 - 830
      • Community antenna television, radio distribution, network-powered broadband communications systems
Afternoon Session:
  1. Chapter 9: Tables and Annexes
    • Understanding and applying tables, annexes, and examples for calculations
  2. Comprehensive Review and Q&A Session
    • Recap of key topics, clarification of doubts, and preparation for NEC compliance
  3. Final Assessment and Certification
    • Completion of course assessment for certification

This outline is structured to be informative, giving a clear view of what participants can expect from the four 10-hour courses.

Each student must take all four Parts 1 through 4 totaling 40 hours to receive a certificate from Advancing The Needle LLC (OCILB Training agency) However, it is not required to begin with Part 1. You can start with any part, such as Part 3, then move on to Part 4, followed by Part 1 and Part 2. The course can be started at any time, and as long as you complete all four parts, you will qualify for your certificate.

When all the courses are completed you will receive the certificate showing that you have completed 40 hours.
  To receive a certificate from Advancing The Needle LLC (an OCILB training agency), students must complete all four parts (Parts 1 through 4) for a total of 40 hours. However, it is not required to begin with Part 1. You can start with any part, such as Part 3, then move on to Part 4, followed by Part 1 and Part 2. The course can be started at any time, and as long as you complete all four parts, you will qualify for your certificate. Conclusion By the end of this class, you will have a solid foundation in the Electrical codes and standards required for professional practice in Ohio and beyond.
